Expert Advice On Offer For Charities
South West chartered accountancy firm Milsted Langdon offered charities in the area some free advice on how they can continue to prosper even in difficult economic times, at a free seminar in Taunton this week.
The event covered the following topics:
- A review and commentary on the latest Charity Commission guidance
- Investment strategies for charities, including trustees responsibilities and the Trustee Act 2000, problems with and the alternatives to cash, and the balance between investment risks and rewards
- Disaster recovery planning for charities and their IT systems
- A review of topical tax issues and key tax planning areas for charities
It took place at Milsted Langdon’s offices in Taunton on Tuesday (30 November), and was followed by a buffet lunch.
Milsted Langdon partner Sarah Jenkins said: “Charities and other not for profit organisations are in a unique position in the business world. Their goals are driven by the desire to further social, environmental or cultural objectives rather than by maximising profit.
“However, in the current economic climate, financial issues have become a real focal point for many charities. Recent research by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) showed that a third of charities have no funding in reserve, and the median level was just one month’s expenditure.
“We were pleased to be able to offer local charities advice on the strategies they needed to have in place to ensure they thrive in the long term, and can handle both potential threats and opportunities.”
