Accountant Gets On His Bike For Charity
A trainee accounts technician from Westcountry-based accountants Milsted Langdon has cycled the length of the country in order to raise funds for charity.
Martin Johnson, from the firm’s Taunton office, teamed up with nine friends during July to cycle the 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O’Groats in aid of Macmillan Cancer Research.
They followed a route similar to that taken by seven celebrities for the Sport Relief Million Pound Bike ride in March, riding around 80 to 90 miles per day for 12 days.
The group are hoping to have raised in the region of £10,000, once all the sponsorship money and donations are collected in.
After months of preparation, the team were ready to set off from Land’s End, experiencing some fantastic scenery but also encountering a few problems along the way – but they overcame everything nature threw at them to arrive at the top of Scotland as planned.
Martin said: “With everybody in good spirits, the miles flew past in the early stages although we did face some difficulties along the way including some steep hills, bad weather and bicycle breakdowns.
“As weird as it sounds, the last day was our worst day when the rain never really stopped, but eventually we saw the best sign ever, which said ‘John O’Groats 1’. We seemed to fly the last mile with people racing to be the first over the line. Eventually we settled down and just rolled down hill to the coast and to the end of our cycle, then the celebrations could start!”
