Tony Setter headed the firm's Tax team until April 2007, being experienced in both personal and corporation tax. He spent twenty years as a tax partner with Ernst & Young in Devon, during which period he gained vast experience advising entrepreneurs from predominantly owner-managed businesses in the South West. He joined Milsted Langdon in 1999 and retired as a partner at the end of April 2007 whilst maintaining an on-going consultancy role.

Corporate Tax

Tony has a wealth of experience in Strategic Tax Planning, structuring companies (or groups) to minimise the corporate tax burden. This is achieved by maximising the use of reliefs coupled with pre year-end planning and a detailed consideration of how funds can be extracted from the company tax efficiently by the shareholders/directors/family generally.

Personal Tax

Maximising wealth and net spendable income for entrepreneurs is an area of tax planning where Tony has very wide experience. This comprehensive planning involves the integration of both corporate and personal tax planning and covers :

• Minimising the income tax and national insurance burden
• Restructuring to maximise reliefs and minimise capital gains tax
• Inheritance tax planning and Wills
• The use of trusts where appropriate
• Investing in pension schemes (particularly self administered) if appropriate
• Succession planning and exit routes

Corporate Finance

Tony provides tax advice in respect of both share and asset transactions, for vendors and purchasers, developing the structure which provides the maximum tax benefits. He also conducts Strategy Workshops, in conjunction with his corporate finance colleagues, to assist Boards of Directors to identify their strategic objectives and plan how to achieve these aims.

Expert Witness Instructions

Litigation involving sub-standard tax advice is increasing as the legislation becomes more and more complex. Tony has considerable experience as he is continually involved in providing preliminary advice, preparing reports and from time to time appears in court as an expert witness.
